Endure to Conquer...

Bridge, the first steel suspension bridge built to connect Brooklyn and Manhattan. It took 14 years to complete this bridge. The Civil Engineer John Augustus Roebling was the man behind this steel marvel. After his demise his son Washington Roebling takes over the task, unfortunately, he falls sick with “caisson disease”. It affected him so badly that he became bed-ridden. His wife Emily Warren Roebling, takes full charge of the construction work. Washington Roe would monitor the work with the help of binocular, while Emily would relay the instructions from Washington roe to his assistants. She gained phenomenal knowledge on the strength of materials, stress analysis, cable construction and other intricacies of civil engineering. Emily's dedication to the completion of the Brooklyn Bridge was unyielding. She took over much of the chief engineer duties, including day-to-day supervision and project management. When Washington's title of the chief engineer was in jeopardy because of his sickness, she went all out to fight for her husband and retained the title. When the bridge was completed in 1883 she was the first one to cross the bridge with the rooster in her lap as a symbol of victory. It was the courage and strength of Emily which helped the Roebling family to realize their dream. Brooklyn bridge still stands tall as a testimony for Emily’s resilience.

Resilience is the determination to cope up after a setback, it’s the capacity to recover quickly from the difficult situation. Neither Washington nor Emily gave up on the vision of finishing the task at hand. But what do we do when adversity hits us? We lose hope, get so anxious that we even loose the right direction. Nevertheless, if we face it with confidence, we will definitely be the winners. We have a rich history of the resilient people who had risen from ashes to glory. To name few, Thomas Alva Edison’ s teacher called him “too stupid to learn anything”, Walt Disney was sacked by a newspaper company for not being creative, he had also failed in multiple businesses before he could start Disney land. Michael Jorden was dropped from his high school team for poor performance. There are so many eminent men and women who made a mark in their life, because they were able to handle challenges with determination and focus.

Most of us are born with the capacity to endure hardest times, good news to the rest of the crowd is, this skill could be cultivated. The steps for resilient life is to remain calm, accept, nourish yourself with positive thoughts, derive strength from within and move forward. Practice this in less challenging situations then move on to the next level. We can achieve anything with practice. Wear the sports men attitude. Train your brain to handle the most difficult situations with ease. The gold which ensures maximum heat turns out to be a beautiful ornament. We find most precious stones formed under the earth because of compression and pressure. Remember this, tough times don’t last, tough people do.
